In an industry soon to celebrate it’s 200th anniversary, attracting, training and retaining the next generation of talent into its ranks is of paramount importance. The rail industry has recognised the difficulty in doing this in recent years, as younger generations are drawn away from what are considered traditional workplaces or even work patterns. On this panel, experts from some of the best training associations in the rail industry will discuss how rail might change its image as an employer and what the next generation of rail are currently looking for.

MODERATOR/SPEAKERS
Daisy has recently moved on from her role at East West Rail and is now a rail Specification Manager at Transport for the North. Daisy was the Innovation Manager at East West Rail; with a passion for transport transformation, accessibility, sustainability, and inclusion. Delivering innovation into this nationally significant railway project, East West Rail will enable much-needed transport connections for communities between Oxford and Cambridge. Daisy works to make rail better for all customers; safer, accessible, and enjoyable. She is also a non-exec board member for the Community Rail Network.
A customer focused individual with excellent communication and relationship skills, she is a certified change management practitioner and accredited coach who is passionate about transformation across organisations and wider society. Since joining Network Rail in 2005, she has worked in many roles across the business and on strategic programmes driving changes with people and culture at the forefront. Supporting various charities, she is a Board Trustee for Women in Rail, an Ambassador for Employers’ Initiative on Domestic Abuse, a Champion for White Ribbon UK, and a trained Mental Health First Aider. Her accolades include: Inspirational Woman of the Year at the 2018 Women in Rail Awards; an MBE in the 2021 Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to diversity and inclusion; featured in a 2022 book celebrating Indian independence ‘75 years, 75 women, 75 words’. Recognising her impact in creating conversations and encouraging a culture of participation through her writing, she was selected as the 2023 EMEA Region Viva Engage Community Champion by SWOOP Analytics and Microsoft. More recently she was invited to the 2024 Vaisakhi Reception at 10 Downing Street.
Bonnie is the CEO of Young Rail Professionals (YRP). She has been on the board since 2020 and has been elected into her second term at the helm. She is the first woman to hold this position through two elections and the second person in YRP’s history to do so. Her day job is as a management consultant within the rail industry.
Paul Plummer is Professor in Rail Strategy, Director of University of Birmingham Centre for Rail Research & Education (BCRRE) and lead for UK Rail Research & Innovation Network (UKRRIN). Key areas of research focus on the transport system from a customer experience and mobility perspective including the implications for public policy. Formerly CEO at Rail Delivery Group (RDG), Group Strategy Director at Network Rail and President of European Infrastructure Managers (EIM). Also working as non-executive director and as a mentor.
Mark is the Director of Operator Services at Rail Partners. His team works closely with train operators developing and sharing good practice to help them deliver a safe, efficient, reliable and sustainable railway. Mark also sits on the advisory board for Routes into Rail which is a cross-industry initiative to promote careers in rail. Prior to joining Rail Partners, Mark was Head of Railway Strategy at the Rail Delivery Group where he led work to improve the performance and planning of the railway. And before joining RDG, Mark worked at the Department for Transport on a wide range of policies including the development of rail skills, innovation and supply chain strategies.
