In March 2023, Network Rail undertook a £2 million investment to upgrade track located in a 175-year-old Staffordshire tunnel. There had not been any major work on the track, which runs between Longton and Blythe Bridge stations, since 1968.
In this exclusive interview, Alex Thompson, Principle Technical Officer for Network Rail, discusses the £2 million track upgrade in the Staffordshire tunnel, including how the upgrade will change passenger journeys going forward and the challenges that came with working within the 175-year-old tunnel.
