Amtrak and the Illinois Department of Transportation have issued a safety warning after receiving approval for maximum train speeds up to 110mph for most of the Chicago-St. Louis corridor.
The new federal grant will allow a $170 million project to bring rail and viaduct improvements and jobs to Chicago’s West Side community, with $80 million in local contracts and employment already underway.
Amtrak has agreed to support the proposed combination of current partner, Canadian Pacific Railway Limited and Kansas City Southern railways, to expand Amtrak’s service in the Midwest and South.
The C.R.E.A.T.E project will generate significant benefits for the movement of goods and people whilst improving safety for the local communities.
A recent state grant will help fund a $4.4 million project in Peru, Illinois that is focused on making the rail line safer and more efficient.
