Moving freight by rail is no doubt the most energy-efficient means of land-based transportation, but as Libor Lochman, Executive Director of the Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies (CER) explains, more must still be done to entice potential customers onto rail and achieve a modal shift for freight.

It will be on the basis of this policy agenda that the CER will engage with commissioners and members of the European Parliament during 2019.
First organised in 2007, the European Railway Award celebrates and recognises the political and technical contributions of accomplished individuals to the rail sector.
The ‘open’ nature of stations and trains continually make them targets for terrorist attacks. But with project SHERPA, coordinated by the UIC, key players in the railway sector are coming together and focus on various actions that will help railways cope better with present and future threats.
An efficient CEF will provide vital funding to rail and help to further increase its contribution to the EU’s 2030 climate targets.

Libor Lochman, Executive Director of the Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies (CER), writes that 2018 saw mixed results for transport legislation, but there’s great hope for 2019.
Rail is the most sustainable and energy-efficient low-emission transport mode and it plays a crucial role in the decarbonisation of the transport sector.
Regulations from the EU, that the railways then implement, need to be passenger-centric at all times to ensure rail is an attractive mode of transport.
Rail has a central role to play in providing climate-friendly transport and helping Europe meet its sustainability challenges, and remains the best solution for promoting safe, clean and green mobility.
The CER is calling upon policymakers to better reflect the importance of the digital transformation of rail in the new CEF proposal by increasing the allocated budget.
The programme proposes the possibility to blend EU grants with financial instruments, such as the InvestEU Fund, enabling additional sources of financing for transport projects…
