Bombardier Transportation is to supply 18 additional doubledeck coaches to Deutsche Bahn (DB) AG worth approximately €24 million ($33 million US). Deutsche Bahn AG is using an option from a 2003 framework agreement, comprising the delivery of 298 double-deck coaches as well as an option for a further 300 double-deck coaches.
The ordered coaches are intended for DB Regio in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) and in Baden-Württemberg and will be in service on various routes from December 2010 onwards.
DB Regio needs to strengthen its existing fleet and the addition of these modern doubledeck coaches are the solution to growing passenger numbers in both regions.
DB Regio NRW GmbH will receive 13 double-deck coaches with high-floor entrance. These coaches include air conditioning systems, convenient luggage racks and wider entrance areas.
DB Regio AG in Baden-Württemberg will receive five double-deck intermediate coaches with low-floor entrance. These coaches will be in use on the line Stuttgart – Karlsruhe and Stuttgart – Singen and have multi-purpose compartments with space for wheelchairs, prams and bulky luggage. They will also be equipped with electronic displays for information and entertainment as well as exterior loudspeakers. All coaches will feature innovative LED lighting which saves energy while indirect lighting will ensure a pleasant ambience for passengers.
The double-deck coaches will be produced at Bombardier’s plant in Görlitz. The delivery is planned for the second half of 2010. Around 2,000 double-deck coaches have already been supplied to Deutsche Bahn from Görlitz since 1993.
