MTR Nordic, a wholly owned subsidiary of MTR Corporation, has begun operating the Stockholm Pendeltåg which carries approximately 87 million passenger journeys per year.

MTR was awarded the ten-year concession in December 2015 including an option for a four year extension.

The Stockholm Pendeltåg is a commuter railway system that connects the Swedish capital with surrounding county areas. It consists of four rail routes with a total length of 241 km, serving 53 stations. It is currently Sweden’s second largest railway concession after the Stockholm Metro, which MTR has operated since 2009.

The company will be responsible for train operations, station and rolling stock management and will also work collaboratively with authorities to improve the Pendeltåg’s performance.

As part of its development plan, MTR will invest almost 50 million SEK (£4.3 million) in station refurbishment during 2017-18 – to improve passenger comfort and safety – and staff development including personnel training and 150 new vacancies. MTR also plans to hold regular web panels and consultations with passengers to ensure their concerns are addressed.

Commenting on the start of the concession Jeremy Long, CEO of MTR Europe, said: “We look forward to working with the staff of the Pendeltåg operation who will join us, to deliver the high standards of service and performance that we have established in all our European operations.”
