MTR Corporation to operate Stockholm Commuter Rail Service

MTR Nordic, a wholly owned subsidiary of MTR Corporation, has been chosen to operate the commuter rail service Stockholm Pendeltåg for an initial period of 10 years from December 2016.

The Stockholm Pendeltåg concession, announced by Stockholm County Council, is the second largest in Sweden after the Stockholm Metro, which MTR Corporation has operated since 2009.

The Pendeltåg is a commuter railway system which connects Sweden’s capital city with surrounding county areas. It consists of four rail routes with a total length of 241 km, serving 53 stations and carrying approximately 87 million passenger journeys a year.

Under the concession, the company will be responsible for train operations, station management and rolling stock maintenance. The ten year agreement also includes an option for extension for an additional four years.

The operator has also successfully launched the MTR Express in Sweden, an intercity train service between the key east and west coast cities of Stockholm and Gothenburg. In addition, Stockholm City Council recently extended the concession of MTR Stockholm to operate the Stockholm Metro for another six years, from 2017 to 2023.
