Business group Logistics UK named Tesco the Rail Business of the Year for the second year running at its annual Logistics Awards, held at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge on Thursday 12 December 2024.
Tesco operates nine services daily, across multiple commodities connecting Tesco distribution centres to each area of Scotland, England, and Wales, also including suppliers’ locations to ensure a full mode shift. Using rail services, Tesco moves 6.2m cases per week of FMCG products in a just in time supply chain, which has removed over 2,200 movements from the road per week. The company continues to review its network to ensure that the most efficient mode of transport is always used to deliver for the business.
David Wells OBE, Logistics UK’s Chief Executive commented, “With 12% of weekly volume now moved via rail, resulting in 2,200 fewer lorry movements per week, Tesco shows its commitment to achieving its carbon neutral goals. I would like to congratulate Tesco on its win; it truly is ‘the best of the best’ in the rail sector.”
Logistics UK’s Logistics Awards 2024 recognise and celebrate the companies and individuals who have made a significant contribution to the logistics and supply industry over the past 12 months and who excel in their fields. The awards were sponsored by headline sponsor Unipart and organisations including Allstar, BP, Brigade Electronics, CNS Online, Howard Tenens, Logistics UK Recovery, M6 Toll, Port of Dover, R2C Online and Weightmans LLP. The full list of winners can be found here.
