Kapsch CarrierCom has already implemented train safety systems using GSM-R technology throughout the world. Now the firm has won another contract from the Polish railway company PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. An ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) will be implemented along the E30 line from Legnica through Wroclaw to Opole. Kapsch is to design and install the GSM-R equipment for the system. The contract is worth EUR 9.2 million and the term of the project is 24 months.

The most important objective of ERTMS is to ensure the interoperability of railway service in Europe. Kapsch has already gathered in-depth knowledge on train radio communications. “We specialize in digital train communications where we do research and development for next generation technologies and work as well on the implementation of specific projects. We now draw on this experience to enjoy success in tenders around the world. This new contract in Poland is another nice confirmation of Kapsch’s competence”, said Horst Kaufmann, Vice President Sales GSM-R for the CEE region at Kapsch CarrierCom.

Implementation and technical support

The project comprises, among other aspects, the expansion of the existing BSCs (Base Station Controllers) and TCUs (Transcoder Units) infrastructure as well as the delivery and implementation of 32 BTS 9000 base stations at 16 locations along the E30 line. Kapsch will build up the BTS infrastructure in cooperation with Torpol, its local partner. As stated in contract, the project is to be completed in 24 months. Additionally, PKP PLK S.A. has requested a five year warranty, which will include technical support services provided by Kapsch.
