Germany’s rail network is the largest in Europe and its market is a showcase for successful competition in the provision of both passenger and freight services. Mack Brooks has recently released ‘The Rail Market in Germany 2012’ – an up-to-date report that provides a comprehensive overview of the country’s main line and regional rail transport market. Details about planned rail infrastructure projects are also highlighted, plus a list of the principal train operators active in Germany in the first quarter of 2012; a list of the leading open access companies that provide regional and local services; and a list of current open access freight operators. A summary of all current rail-based urban transport systems in Germany is also covered, including metro, light-rail and tram operators and their network development plans.

I have not read the book by Mack Brooks but you can be sure of one thing, there will definitely be a dearth of British companies involved in the German rail network. Deutsche Bahn are now heavily involved in UK rail services – both freight and passenger – but they seem to keep the door somewhat closed to British and other European companies.
