The second phase of the FRMCS introduction begins

Dan Mandoc, Head of FRMCS at the UIC, breaks down the achievements reached so far in the development of the Future Railways Mobile Communication System (FRMCS).

The second phase of the FRMCS introduction begins

The choice to use GSM-R has been a great success, with it being a proven ERTMS component, implemented on some 130,000km of track in Europe, with 90,000 cab radios (voice) and 20,000 EDORs now activated.

GSM-R is supporting the Train Driver to Signaller Voice applications, including ‘railway emergency call’, ETCS (data), and other applications including ATO GoA 2 via GPRS.

What is FRMCS?

The Future Railways Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) is a 3GPP 5G stand-alone system that will incorporate an intermediate layer between the application and transport layers, which are the 3GPP mission critical services.

The mission critical services will enable voice, data and video functionality to achieve group calls and functional numbering, in addition to quality of service, which an absolute necessity for railway communication services.
