NedTrain, the company in charge of the service and maintenance of the Dutch Railway fleet, has selected Alstom for the design and manufacturing of 161 IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) traction systems to equip 81 regional trains. The contract is worth nearly €36 million and covers the replacement of the existing GTO (Gate Turn Off transistors) traction converter by a modern IGBT traction converter. The contract also includes the replacement of the traction motors.

These new and modern traction systems will improve interoperability with new signaling systems, solve obsolescence issues and ease maintenance.

The design, production and commissioning of these traction systems will be carried out in Alstom site of modernization in Ridderkerk (The Netherlands)Traction motors will be made in Alstom site of Ornans (France). The newly equipped trains will come into service in January 2012 on the Dutch Railway network.
