In Switzerland, the technique of ballast compacting has been used for many years following the tamping process in order for the lateral resistance to meet the predefined values; ensuring trains can immediately run at line speed again. In 2014, joint testing between Sersa Maschineller Gleisbau AG (SMG) and MATISA SA was conducted on the Swiss railway network to better understand the processes and to develop a new-generation of ballast-compaction.
Sersa Maschineller Gleisbau AG (SMG, formerly J.Müller AG) based in Effretikon, Switzerland and the machine manufacturer MATISA SA based in Crissier,
Switzerland, have built up a long-standing and successful partnership. In 2014, they began joint testing on SBB’s railway network to develop a new-generation of ballast compaction techniques, resulting in an initial installation on the compactor and levelling machine R20RD with metric track width.
In this interview for Global Railway Review, Matthias Manhart from Sersa and Roger Grossniklaus from MATISA, share details of their successful partnership.
