Ansaldo STS (STS.MI), a Finmeccanica company, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) yesterday in Rome with Russian Railways (RZD) for the creation of a joint venture between Ansaldo STS (49%) and NIIAS (49%) and SM (2%), two of RZD’s subsidiaries, to develop initiatives in railway signalling, telecommunications, automation and safety & security.
Specifically, the agreement covers the supply of technology for 100 stations, for 100 vehicles and 50 railway lines by 2020, for a combined value that could be up to EUR 1,5 billion.
Starting from 2011, Ansaldo STS will contribute its own technology to the joint venture on the basis of specific orders received from Russian Railways.
Ansaldo STS has a long track record of collaborating with RZD and its subsidiary NIIAS, with which the company signed a contract last year to jointly develop the innovative railway signalling system ITARUS-ATC for train safety and control.
With this new agreement Ansaldo STS strengthens its position in the signalling Russian market sector, so entering into the station deployment segment.
