The Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) has today published statistics highlighting year-on-year levels of government financial support to the rail industry (1985-86 to 2012-13).

Statistics show that in 2012-13 the rail industry received a £5.1bn government subsidy, this is £524 million greater than the previous year. The subsidy includes £1,536 million of spending on major rail projects such as Crossrail – a rise of £828 million on the previous year.

Data also highlights that 2012-13 is the third successive year that the government received money back from train operating companies as part of their franchise agreement. In 2012-13, the government received £420m.
