Alstom has completed work overhauling Northern Rail’s 17-strong Class 323 regional fleet to help produce a modern fleet for commuters and the client, with more than 2,000 components exchanged.
The project was undertaken at Alstom’s Longsight depot in Manchester, with two overhauls being taken on simultaneously.
The work undertaken on one project included bogies being exchanged, inter-vehicle couplers being overhauled, new gangways fitted and brake equipment exchanged. The rest of the work saw car floorboards and flooring replaced, seat shells refurbished and re-covered, and car heaters and train doors overhauled.
Northern Rail’s 323234 was the first of the Class 323s to be overhauled, and 323231 being the last to go through the process.
More than 2,000 components were exchanged on each three-car unit, with the work being undertaken by a dedicated team over a five week period.
