Q&A with Lucie Anderton, UIC: High-speed rail and sustainability

In this video interview, Lucie Anderton, Head of Sustainability at the UIC, spoke to Global Railway Review about some of the challenges of building and operating high-speed rail in a sustainable way, and how fast trains can be integrated with other modes of transport to create sustainable mobility networks.
At the UIC’s High-Speed Congress in March 2023, Global Railway Review interviewed Lucie Anderton, Head of Sustainability at the UIC, about some of the challenges of building and operating high-speed rail in a sustainable way.
In the video interview, Lucie discusses how high-speed rail can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable transportation, the ways in which high-speed rail projects can be designed to promote sustainable development and minimise any negative impacts on the environment and communities, and what policies and regulations are needed to promote the development and operation of high-speed rail in a sustainable way.
As Head of Sustainability, Lucie leads on environmental technical topics and global climate advocacy at the International Union of Railways (UIC). On secondment from Network Rail, the UK rail infrastructure manger, Lucie has more than 17 years of experience in sustainability and environmental management in the rail industry and major infrastructure projects.
