Dear Mr Duncan,
I have found your article “East Coast – where ‘Falcon’ meets ‘Eagle'” to be very interesting. However, the photo (p.54) showing the operator checking wheel profile manually, using a template, has suggested to me that I should mention an extension to your ‘Falcon’ – the automatic wheel geometry measurement system.
The wheel diagnostic system developed by GRAW for the Intercity fast trains in Poland is capable of measuring wheel profile wear (wheel tread parameters, diameter, bogie geometry) and out-of-roundness along with identification of cars and wheels for trains coaches moving at speeds of up to 20 km/h. This system: http://www.graw.com/index.php/en/laser-wheel-and-bogie-measurements
has the capability to measure all wheel profile data on a train unit for the wheel turning process. This system may be separate from the depot computer system, but incorporates the facility to download data directly to the depot control system, and personal computers. Logging of specific wheel set profile data may be carried out electronically to determine vehicle wheel profile wear and running trends. The measurement procedure is fully automatic and does not call for any operator involvement.
It is assumed that the trains can travel in both directions, however only one direction will be defined as the measurement direction. The switchboard – working place for a supervisor (computer and software) – may be installed inside the workshop building no further than 100 m away from the measurement system and provides access to measurement data collected automatically by the wheel diagnostic system. The recorded data may be downloadable directly onto the depot control system, and personal computers.
